The USS Midway was the United States’ longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, from 1945 to 1992. Approximately 200,000 sailors served aboard the carrier, known for several naval aviation breakthroughs as well as several humanitarian missions. It was the only carrier to serve the entire length of the Cold War and beyond. It is currently a museum ship in San Diego, California.
It is one of the tourist attraction in San Diego. It is said to be while transiting back to the Philippines to pick up the ship’s air wing, Midway was rerouted to act as a floating airfield in support of special operation forces rescuing the SS Mayagüez. Midway picked up the ship’s regular air wing again a month later when the aircraft carrier returned NAS Cubi Point, Philippines.
From LA we rented a van going to San Diego. It took 2-3 hours of travel.
